RESOURCES: (X) (X) (X) (X) (X)

This is a good resource for alternatives to “walk (adverb)”, however, I feel compelled to add that it’s okay to use walk if you aren’t trying to establish any particular descriptor along with it and you don’t overuse it. By all means, write “She ambled” over “She walked casually”, but don’t be afraid to use the simplest terms when you really do just mean walk. Just don’t overdo it, and you’ll be fine. And please, PLEASE don’t be afraid to use said. I don’t care what elementary language teachers told us, said is not dead.

things people do in real world dialogue:

• laugh at their own jokes

• don’t finish/say complete sentences

• interrupt a line of thought with a sudden new one

• say ‘uh’ between words when unsure

• accidentally blend multiple words together, and may start the sentence over again

• repeat filler words such as ‘like’ ‘literally’ ‘really’ ‘anyways’ and ‘i think’

• begin and/or end sentences with phrases such as ‘eh’ and ‘you know’, and may make those phrases into question form to get another’s input

• repeat words/phrases when in an excited state

• words fizzle out upon realizing no one is listening

• repeat themselves when others don’t understand what they’re saying, as well as to get their point across

• reply nonverbally such as hand gestures, facial expressions, random noises, movement, and even silence

Hey btw if you don’t know how to program, you should check out [novelty], which is a free Visual Novel creation software. Absolutely no programming required, and it’s super easy to use, I played with it some when I was a teen but the only reason I didn’t do much with it is cuz I made my story complicated and had like 5000 different branching routes that kept spawning new routes and made myself confused LMAO

But yeah, it’s a WYSIWYG with a really straight-forward GUI, if I remember correctly.

It even comes with some free backgrounds and characters and stuff, and this is what it looks like:

image

Did I mention it’s super duper free? It hasn’t been updated since 2010, but it has basically all you’d need to make a simple visual novel.

Just make sure your DirectX runtime is updated, cuz it can act buggy if it’s outdated, but this program is so old that I doubt it’d even be an issue lol

holy shit

This is so cool? Can you imagine fanfic in this format?

YO

@becausedragonage @ashidoodle can I recommend Choice Script? It’s like a choose your own adventure coding program. The finished product looks like this, where every option sends you down a different path:

image

They are literally books you can play. You can even insert your own character’s name and pronouns and that would make writing reader inserts so much easier And as a writer who can not art, writing and making dating sims and games is more convenient.

The coding is also super simple and easy to learn and all it requires other than the program files is a text editor. And just like that you can start typing up like you would your own fanfics or stories. Plus it’s very versatile so you can make your game/book as simple or as complicated as you want, and even implement stats and inventory systems.

AND CHOICE SCRIPT IS ALSO SUPER DUPER FREE. THE COMPANY EVEN PUBLISHES YOUR FINISHED GAME FOR YOU AND GIVES YOU ROYALTIES IF YOU CHOOSE TO SELL IT. THE PROGRAM STILL GETS UPDATED AND  THE COMPANY PUBLISHES BOOKS EVERY MONTH INCLUDING THE FANMADE ONES. THERE’S ALSO A FORUM FOR PEOPLE TO POST WIPS AND TALK ABOUT CHOICE SCRIPT AND GET HELP.

And there’s Ren'py, also for visual novels!

🍎🍏 apple jam 🍏🍎

Honestly if you’ve never tried apple jam you are missing out, it is my favourite thing ever and it is so so easy, here’s how:

You will need:

  • Cooking apples (I used Bramley apples but any type of cooking apples should work)
  • Jam sugar (this contains pectin which is what sets the jam)
  • Water

Method:

  • Peel, core and chop your apples then weigh them
  • Measure out water that is ¼ of the weight of your apples (so for example if you had 1kg of apple then you would add 250g/ml of water)
  • Add the apples and water to a large pan and stew on a low heat for approx. 20 mins stirring occasionally or until an applesauce texture is reached
  • Once the apples are fully cooked, remove from heat and mash with a potato masher to remove any large lumps (if you want a super smooth jam then purée)
  • Once the desired consistency has been reached return to the heat and add jam sugar that is equal in weight to the uncooked apples (so for example if you had 1kg of apples you would add 1kg of jam sugar)
  • Bring jam mixture to the boil, stirring constantly. Once the mix begins to boil reduce the heat and stir occasionally.
  • Place a small amount of jam (about half a teaspoon) onto a plate. After waiting a few moments, so as to not burn yourself, push your finger through the jam, if the surface wrinkles then the jam is ready, remove it from the heat. However if the jam does not wrinkle, then continue to heat, testing every minute or so until it passes the wrinkle test
  • Fill sterilised jars until 1/2cm from the top and cover with greaseproof paper ensuring that the lids are added while the jam is still hot as this vacuums the lid to the jar keeping it fresher for longer
  • For reference 1kg of apples, 250ml of water and 1kg of sugar will make approx. 5 standard size jars of jam or 3 larger jars

That’s it! Congratulations you’ve just made apple jam, the tastiest thing on earth now go forth and enjoy.
